LBSU 304 Week 1 Agenda


There will be a shorter face to face class next week because of Halloween.  We are still responsible to complete all the work that we would have covered in a full three hour face to face meeting on Tuesday 10/31/17 so I will do a portion of next week's class tonight after I cover the Week 1 material.

Class organization: What does the agenda look like each class session?

When is everything due?

Every writing assignment for each week will be due on Sunday by midnight so for the Week 1 assignment that we will review in class tonight Tuesday October 23, 2017  it will be due this Sunday October 29, 2017 by midnight.

Every discussion board Main Post will be due the Thursday after our Tuesday night class. So for this week the Main Post will be due Thursday October 26, 2017 by midnight.  The two responses to others will be due on Sunday by midnight so this week your two responses will be due Sunday October 29, 2017 by midnight.

Breaks?
Class breaks will be determined by the majority of the class.  We will take a vote at the beginning of class each night to determine a break or an early release from class.

Look at the Table of Contents to get an idea of what types of essays you will encounter during this class session.  Choose three essay titles or quotes that catch your eye.  Be prepared to share a prediction, a comment or a connection that you may have with one of these essays.  If someone else chooses the same essay, be prepared to share a back up essay that you selected.

Week One Writing assignment and Rubric-Please review the EAP Writing Rubric that I will be using for all of your LBSU 304 writing assignments under course information in Blackboard.

Instructions:
Several of your courses may ask you to “reflect” on readings and/or write a reflection paper or essay.  The general idea is for you to read, view, or do something, and then figure out what it means to you.   Some of your writing is devoted to analyzing what you read, viewed or did, and some of it is devoted to its meaning for you.  In your reflection, read three essays in your text (The Norton Reader).   Select from the list noted in the “Readings and Preparation” section above. Then write a reflection, using the headings below.  Your reflection should be a minimum of 500 words.  This assignment will also help you become accustomed to the style of essays in your text for this course.  The minimum word requirement for this assignment is a bit shorter than others in the course, which are a minimum of 750 words.  This difference is intentional to help you adjust to the style of work in the course.  You will be reading essays throughout the course.

Headings for Reflection Essay: Each section will be worth 15 points

o    In your introduction, address the readings you chose and why you selected them.

                        Challenges of the Readings (15)
                         
o    Under this heading, explain two or more challenges that you had while reading.  These challenges can be anything from finding yourself distracted or finding a need to re-read passages.  Include how you might face these challenges when you read additional essays later in the class.
o     
                        Highlight of Readings (15)
                         
o    Under this heading, explain two or more highlights of the readings.  What did you learn, like or discover, and what surprised you?  Were there any assumptions you held before you read the essays?  If so, did these assumptions change after reading them?  Please elaborate.        
                         
                        Ask the Author (15)
                         
o    Imagine that you have an opportunity to follow up with one of these authors and ask them to tell you more.  What would you ask and why?
o     
                        Your Personal Account or Journal Plan (15)
                         
o    Think about what you would write about if you were to write a personal account or journal plan.  What would you write about and why?  How would it be different or similar to the accounts or journals you read?
                         

Total Points =15 x 5=75 points total

In order to receive a 15 for each section your response must be excellent in the following areas: Organization, Mechanics, and Synthesis of information.

In order to receive a 12 for each section your response must be good in the following areas: Organization, Mechanics, and Synthesis of information.

In order to receive a 9 for each section your response must be average in the following areas: Organization, Mechanics, and Synthesis of information.

In order to receive a 6 or below for each section your response must be lacking in the following areas: Organization, Mechanics, and Synthesis of information.

Save your paper as a doc or rtf with your name and the assignment name in the file, using Last Name_Assignment.  So, if your name were Alicia Jackson, and this is Reflection Essay, you would title it Jackson_Reflection.  Upload your paper by clicking the "WEEK 1 REFLECTION ESSAY" link.
